Why We Love Medium Labradoodles

Medium Labradoodles

Australian Labradoodles originated in Australia and have a more diverse ancestry beyond just Labrador Retrievers and Poodles. Australian Labradoodles often include other breeds in their lineage, such as the Irish Water Spaniel, the Curly Coat Retriever, and the Cockapoo, to name a few. This mix of breeds contributes to the Australian Labradoodle's unique appearance, coat types, and temperament.

Australian Labradoodles have been categorized into three sizes: Standard, Medium, and Miniature. The size is based on both height at shoulder and weight.

As you can guess, Medium Australian Labradoodles are medium-sized dogs generally bred to stand around 17 to 20 inches tall at the shoulder and weigh between 30 to 45 pounds. Why are they so great? Here are a few top reasons why size matters.

Temperament

Trainable

Poodles, which are a significant part of the Labradoodle's lineage, are highly intelligent and trainable dogs. This trait often carries over to doodles, including medium Labradoodles. They tend to be quick learners and can excel in various training activities and commands.

Adaptable

Medium Labradoodles are often adaptable to various living situations. They can be comfortable in apartments or houses with moderate-sized yards, making them suitable for urban and suburban environments.

Therapeutic / Service Potential

Due to their friendly nature, intelligence, and hypoallergenic coats, medium doodles are often considered for therapy and service work. They can bring comfort and support to individuals in various settings.

Sociable

Medium Labradoodles, and really those doodles of all sizes, are often known for their friendly and sociable personalities. They usually get along well with other dogs, pets, and people, making them good candidates for homes with multiple pets or those who have frequent visitors.

Lifestyle

Versatile

Medium Labradoodles can often participate in a wide range of activities, from casual walks to more advanced training, agility, and even therapy work. They can be versatile companions who adapt well to various activities and environments.

Family-Friendly

Medium Labradoodles are typically well-suited for families with children. Their size is often conducive to interacting with kids in a playful yet not overly delicate manner.

Travel Easily

Medium-sized dogs are usually more travel-friendly than larger breeds. They are easier to transport in cars and airplanes and can comfortably fit into various travel accommodations.

Thrive in Various Climates

Medium doodles are generally adaptable to different environments, including urban and suburban settings. They can thrive in various climates and are usually comfortable both indoors and outdoors.

Appearance

Size

Medium Labradoodles are a good compromise for those who want a dog that's not too small or too large. They are generally more manageable regarding living space, transportation, and handling than larger breeds.

Grooming

The grooming needs of medium Labradoodles can vary depending on the coat type (curly, wavy, etc.), but generally, they require regular brushing and occasional professional grooming. The maintenance routine might be less intensive compared to some larger doodle breeds.

Hypoallergenic Coat

Many doodles, including medium Labradoodles, have low-shedding and hypoallergenic coats. While individual dogs can vary in their coat type, this can be a great advantage for families with allergies.

Health

Exercise Needs

While they still require regular exercise and mental stimulation, medium Labradoodles generally need less physical activity than larger breeds. This can make them a good fit for people who want an active dog but have limitations on how much exercise they can provide.

Fewer Health Problems

In some cases, smaller dogs tend to have fewer joint and skeletal issues that are more common in larger breeds. While this isn't a hard rule, medium-sized dogs might experience fewer health problems related to size than larger breeds.

Energetic Yet Not Overwhelming

Medium Labradoodles tend to have a moderate energy level. They're active and enjoy playtime, walks, and outdoor activities but are not as high-energy as some larger breeds. This can make them a good fit for families who want an active dog without the extreme exercise needs of larger breeds.

Common Traits

Not to say all sizes of Australian Labradoodles don’t share many of these traits. Coats, trainability, and temperament are a few traits seen in all sizes.

Remember that while general traits are associated with medium Labradoodles, each dog is unique. Spending time with a dog before bringing it into your home is important to ensure that its temperament and energy level align with your family's lifestyle and preferences. Whether a dog is a great fit for you depends on your personal preferences, living situation, and ability to provide the care and attention the dog needs.

Working with a Reputable Breeder

By working with a reputable and experienced breeder, your chances of finding the companion of your dreams are much greater. Size and temperament can vary greatly in a litter unless your breeder manages the breeding program very closely, carefully selecting the best quality dogs. It takes years of experience and generations of dogs to begin to fine-tune a breeder’s lines.
